2020 Annual Impact Letter

Welcome to COMPASS Youth Collaborative’s 2020 Annual Impact Letter. You may be asking why now? Why would we choose what was undoubtedly one of the most challenging years for any organization, let alone a nonprofit, as the year to publish our first Impact Report?

Two years ago, COMPASS began developing a new Theory of Change. We started by looking at long-term goals for the youth we serve and then identified the preconditions necessary for our youth to reach those goals. The process led us to revise our mission statement and refocus our work. We felt now is the right time to share the impact of our work with the community.

For twenty-five years, COMPASS has provided Hartford youth with a safe place to develop the skills they need to succeed in education, employment, and life. This year the youth we serve needed us more than ever.

Living in a tough urban environment is difficult when there isn’t a global pandemic; our youth face tremendous challenges. Covid-19 has made it even more difficult for them to navigate these challenges.

Our Peacebuilders have been undaunted by the pandemic. Since March 2020, Peacebuilders have been in the community making sure our youth are healthy and safe. The young people we serve have not just survived during the pandemic; they have continued to thrive.

What did we learn during this year of disruption? That something we have always valued turned out to be the most essential element of our work, relationships.

In this report, you will find stories of relationships and the impact those relationships have had on individuals’ lives. We think the accurate measure of our work lies in these stories, how we helped Sam find stability in his life, how Ashley now lives in a home where she feels safe, and the story of Max, who is proud of the paycheck he earns.

The work we do isn’t easy, and we know we could not do it alone. Our Peacebuilders are relentless; they never give up on our youth. We are fortunate to have a Board of Directors dedicated to our mission, sharing their talents and knowledge. Our partners contribute valuable resources to our youth, and our supporters invest generously in our mission.

To all of you, we say thank you for helping us impact the lives of so many Hartford youth.

We know this coming year will bring even more challenges, we are ready to take them on. We look forward to the next twenty-five years of continuing to impact the lives of Hartford Youth. We hope you will join us in our mission.
